No doubt this is Barcelona greatest week, it is Sant Jordi’s week (Saint George). April 23th is the magic day in my town.
Nothing, nobody neither crowd full streets, nor the thieves who makes the most of this day to make a fortune”protected” into the crowd, nor the great publishing companies marketing strategies, nor the private or public TV always determined being where they more disturb, nor those people who make the most in order to claim for anything, nor the rain, until now nothing and nobody had ruined Sant Jordi’s essence that is Barcelona it self
Has not importance if Sant Jordi’s day is holiday or not. Every year that day Barcelona dress her best clothes, her people.
Whole town wake up full of books and roses. The roses not always are so beautiful and not whole books are good, but they are there, in the streets on improvised tables covered with Catalan flag. Around rows of child walk taking hold of a rope with a poster hanging from their necks with their name and school written on it always under their teachers attend and desperate regard.
The town is full tourists who could think that every day Barcelona looks like that and maybe several can decide making Barcelona their home. Later when they come back here carrying their luggage to begin a new life they will find that Barcelona is a very expensive town and not always is full of roses.
Also you can see old couples who spent all day saying “Before Sant Jordi was another thing” They are right. Every year Sant Jordi ’s day is different but never worse.
