Name on trial

Topic: Daily theme |

This year the family increased with, “the triplet”. Like their overwhelmed father says: “operation 3×1, the ending”. In fact, that’s the beginning but, he even don’t know it.

Three new citizens with their corresponding names and surnames. About the surnames we cannot do anything, or just anything, but the name is another thing.

One of the most difficult decision parents must deal is to name the children. An important decision frequently rash and not enough pondered.

You have just been father and you are there, at the nursery, with your nose hit on glasses looking that bit of heaven, your soon/daughter, thinking on his/her name.

It will be the best name? He/She will like it? Are you thinking.

Suddenly a woman appears and says something like…

Is your boy?… Lovely, he has the same eyes off this actor…. OMG I don’t remember his name…. Marie! Marie! What is the name that actor I like a lot?…. Yes, this one with wonderful blue eyes….You must knowing him…. He played in that movie about a singer and he was her bodyguard… OMG my memory is playing tricks on me…

When the woman finally remember the actor’s name you already has run to the Register and nowadays you have a boy named Kevin Garcia (in some countries this is not strange, but here in Spain this full name combination don’t work well). And you decided it independently if in the future your son would be lawyer, bricklayer, doctor or public notary.
In my opinion it is absolutely necessary to establish a probationary period. I can say that because I feel directly damaged.

All my life I ‘ve shared my name with: first off all my mother. That means during a lot of years I was “Estrellita” not Estrella (something like “little Estrella” on “Estrella Jr”)  No, finally, NO.

But that’s not all. I must tolerate to coexist with: female dogs, cats, mares, ass, pigs, dogs, even a wild boar female. I can prove that, I’ve registered all. Meanwhile we must add an Insurance company, snacks, savings bank, cleaning products, and a lot of indirect references included on poems and songs.

Sometimes I take revenge.  As a sample, my cat’s name is Sergi, because my friend Sergi has a cat named Estrella.

But the worst is the beer. One of the most popular  spanish beer iis named “Estrella”, of course, and nowadays even I turn my head when I listen “One Estrella!”. Awful, that’s awful.

By chance today I’ve found this photograph. It was taken on Estrella street in the Raval neighbourhood.

Always the Raval has been something like the ’s immigration entrance. Years ago the immigration came from other Spain regions, today it came around the world. Always Raval’s history has closely connected with the prostitution. The shop that you can see in the photograph was dedicated (this is very difficult to translate) to selling “Gomas y lavajes” condoms and other things related with that activity. Today, probably, it would be a sex-shoop.

Nowadays this shop has disappeared and the Estrella street is narrower.

If my parents named me Juanita, Mercedes or Anna never I have been written this post
I took the first photograph last winter in London. The last one is by Julià Peiró.

See you

I’ve even seen beer ads for this beer here - it makes me think of you! That is a good thought for me, but I can understand why it must be frustrating having a name that is used for products etc. (My last name is ‘Parker’ and I grew up with people making jokes about ‘Parker pens’.) I loved hearing about how you called your cat Sergi … perfect revenge!!
